Eat and Juice to Keep Alzheimer's Away
A 10-year study named the Kame Project found Alzheimer's risk 76 percent lower
among those who drank juices more than three times a week. As reported by Susan

There is plenty of scientific evidence supporting
the raw vegan diet. And
further evidence continues to come out all the time. Keep abreast of the
Health section of the newspaper. The medical establishment is largely funded
by the meat, dairy and processed food industries as well as the
pharmaceutical industry so a great deal of conflicting information is also
published. However, the truth is now more and more rapidly becoming known
and accepted more and more widely. A very telling new fact, although not
medical science but based on the science of statistics, is that insurance
companies now offer lower rates to vegetarians and vegans as it has been
proven that the vegetarian diet will extend your life by an average of 5
years and the vegan diet will extend your life by an average of 15 years.

DID YOU KNOW?
Preventing Alzheimer’s
The National
Institute of Aging studied the effectiveness of blueberries at protecting the
brain from injury in rats. The rats were divided into two groups. One received a
blueberry-enriched diet, the other did not. Both groups were injected with
kainic acid (a toxic chemical that produces the same type of damage to the brain
caused by dementia and Alzheimer’s).
The result? Rats who had supplemented with blueberries before being injected
showed significantly less impairment than those that did not. But that’s not
all. Rats that did not get blueberries showed a far greater loss of brain cells
than those that pre-supplemented with blueberries.
Another study found that blueberries limit brain injury caused by ischemic
stroke. Blueberries work by protecting the brain against oxidative damage and
inflammation. These are two main causes behind mental decline
Bottom line: Eat a large serving of blueberries daily, or drink fresh raw
blueberry juice. It can help put a stop to developing what is rapidly becoming
one of the most devastating diseases in America.
One out of five people over age 65 are afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. For
people over age 85 it jumps up to one out of two. These numbers are only going
up. It’s expected that there’ll be half a million new cases in the U.S. this
year.
The good news is you can prevent Alzheimer’s before it can rear its ugly head.
Blueberries are a good start. The following are also “brain boosters”
Exercise
– Working out helps reduce inflammation, one of the primary causes of
Alzheimer’s. There’s also a direct link between obesity and dementia. Research
suggests that obese people are at three
times the risk of developing dementia than their thinner
counterparts. The best kind of exercise is one that works out both your heart
and lungs,.
Vegetables and Fruits
– We all know fruits and veggies are good for you. But here’s what you may not
know. They can keep your brain in top shape. A study in the Journal of
Alzheimer’s Disease looked at the link between vegetable and fruit intake
and dementia. Subjects that had a high daily fruit and veggie intake scored much
higher on cognitive tests than those in the low intake group. More importantly,
they had lower biomarkers that are normally associated with Alzheimer’s.
Keeping Your Mind Active – This is one of the best things you can do to ward off dementia. Find activities that engage your mind. Great choices are doing crossword puzzles, learning a new language, or anything that forces you to think on a regular basis.
Currently, there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s. This can put a huge burden on those faced with a loved one who’s been diagnosed with it. Most families turn to prescription drugs. Unfortunately, these drugs do nothing to improve a patient’s quality of life long-term. Sadly, many of these patients end up in care-giver facilities. The result on the families can be undue stress, a financial burden, and time misspent.

Vickie Fisher
(Raw Vegan Network member and owner)
Alzheimer’s Disease. What goes through ones mind when you hear those two words? You may have heard the terms “dementia”, “organic brain syndrome”, “hardening of the arteries”, or “chronic brain syndrome.” Alzheimer’s is actually a type of “dementia”, a term chosen by the medical profession as the least offensive and most accurate term to describe a group of symptoms: memory loss, mental confusion, disorientation, intellectual impairment or similar problems. Alzheimer’s is the most frequent cause of dementia in adults. The intellectual impairment progresses gradually from forgetfulness to total disability. There are structural and chemical changes in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s. This dementing disease knows no social or racial lines: the rich and the poor, the wise and the simple alike are affected. A study estimated that Alzheimer’s disease alone cost the United States $100 billion in 1998.
Why have I become so interested in Alzheimer’s and the prevention of it? I am blessed to have the most wonderful mother-in-law ever, and she is the reason. We have been aware of her forgetfulness for over two years, but a few months ago she was diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s, which now has become moderate stage. Since she lived in another state, it was hard to help her long distance, so we decided to move her close by. At first she stayed with us, which became a full time job. She now is in an assisted living facility just a few miles away.
There is no reason to be ashamed or embarrassed because a family member has a dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. Severe memory loss is never a normal part of growing older. Most of us know elderly people who are active and in full command of their intellect in their 70s, 80s and 90s. Pablo Picasso, Margaret Mead, Duke Ellington Arturo Toscanini, Norman Walker and Paul Bragg were all still active in their careers when they died. They all were past 75, Picasso was 91 and Norman Walker was suspected to have been approximately 116. As more people live longer into later life, it becomes more crucial that we learn about Alzheimer’s and dementia in general and the prevention of it.
